The 2024-2025 wrestling season came to a close Saturday at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as the Canyon View and Santa Cruz boys and Mica Mountain girls went home with team and some individual hardware. Below are the results for the D-II and D-IV boys and D-II girls finals.

D-II Boys

Gabriel Ramirez (Canyon View) had a near perfect day to wrap up his season.

Not only did he become a four-time individual champion, but he also capped off his high school career with yet another team championship as well. He pinned his way through the entire tournament, including the championship match.

Canyon View walked away proud to defend its throne after a slow start to the season.

“On Day 1 we were not ready to win a state title. We did not look like a championship team. We really locked in here at the end. The kids worked their butts off and we peaked at the right time,” Canyon View coach Joseph Ortiz said.

D-IV Boys

Santa Cruz Valley Union (Jacob Engel/AZPreps365)Santa Cruz Valley Union cruised to the D-IV state championship, fueled by six individual finalists, including five champs. An interesting finals matchup happened at 120 between Khel Lipumano (Yuma Catholic) and Jiovanni Chavez (Santa Cruz Valley Union).

Both wrestlers won their respective 2024 state championships, setting up a champ vs. champ match. In a back and forth battle,  Lupumano pulled away late to secure his third individual state championship.

Fortunately for Santa Cruz Valley Union, Chavez’s 2nd place finish was enough for it to clinch the team championship. Chavez still has two remaining years of eligibility to try and win more individual championships.

“We were chasing this since last year, when we were eight points short. It was one of those teams that you ask for. You tell them what to do and they do it all the time, no questions asked. They deserved it. They earned it,” coach Shorty Perales said.
