Tucson High beat Ironwood Ridge 6-1 Friday afternoon to win the championship of the Chris Moon Memorial tournament held at Cherry Field. The Badgers went 6-0 at the tournament including an epic 3-2 win in ten innings over Eagle (ID) in pool play late Wednesday night and a 4-3 comeback win over Eagle in the semifinal round played earlier on Friday.

Ironwood Ridge went 5-1 to take second place, outscoring opponents 59-2 leading up to the championship game. The Nighthawks took a 1-0 lead on the Badgers in the bottom of the third inning on an infield error that scored Angel Figueroa after the sophomore reached on a hit-by-pitch and then stole base.

It looked like that score would hold up but the Badgers broke through in the top of the fifth with three runs with Gennaro Brito doubling in Elias Fuentes, who was pinch running for Javier Encinas Chavez, and Aldo Teilon doubling in Brito and Gabriel Morales.

Freshman pitcher Andrew Hendrick threw five innings for Tucson and he only gave up one hit while striking out three batters. Senior Omar Rodriguez threw the final two innings, collecting two more strikeouts with no hits.

Ironwood Ridge only managed two runners from that point, meanwhile, the Badgers added two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for the 6-1 victory. Brito went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI and Teilon had a double and two RBI. In all, the Badgers collected eight hits. Clifford Graves picked up the hit for the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks went with Noah Peters, Keanu Bracamonte, Graves and Justin Perez. Peters threw the first four innings with four strikeouts.

Tucson senior catcher Jorge Castro was given the MVP bat for his work over the week, including knocking in the winning run against Eagle in the semifinal round.

Tucson (8-6) will host Hamilton (10-3) om Tuesday and Ironwood Ridge (10-2) will host Mica Mountain (4-6-1) on the same day.
