TEMPE – Corona del Sol senior quarterback Alana James threw seven touchdown passes Tuesday as the Aztecs cruised to a 64-0 victory over Westwood.
Three of those touchdown passes went to sophomore receiver Sophia Villone, including a 67-yard strike for a score early in the second quarter to put the Aztecs up 21-0.
James, who completed 20 of 32 passes for 332 yards, was eager to describe her connection with her young teammate.
“Our connection is amazing," James said. "Once we get that eye contact, I feel like I'm pretty confident in her to come down with the pass. Sophia has really good hands,. She can head top a lot of girls. She has a lot of good skills, so when I throw to her, I'm pretty confident she'll get that ball.”
Villone terrorized Westwood’s defense the entire game with four catches for 129 yards.
She also haunted the Warriors offense, intercepting two passes and returning one for a pick-6.
“Last year on defense, I had 16 interceptions, so I think I'm pretty strong on defense as well,” Villone said. “I just think I can read the field pretty well and know where everyone is at all times.”
Aztecs coach Joel Griffin shared some insight on the explosive night for his team’s offense.
“This team understands where they need to be,” Griffin said. “We have about 11 players that can catch the ball and get up the field and turn the game around any time. So, they just understand the process and where they need to be as far as catching the ball.”
Defensively, the Aztecs have yet to concede a score through the first two games. Griffin’s defense corralled another two interceptions and two sacks en route.
Griffin was quick to praise his players and coaches on their early success.
“We have a very good defensive coordinator, coach Jeremy Thorne,” Griffin said. “He likes to mix things up. He's a real film junkie, so he just loves it. The girls buy into it, and they are hungry for it.”
Westwood was only able to gain two first downs. Coach Brian Granata praised Corona del Sol’s defense but also reflected on the coaches performance in Tuesday's matchup.
“We saw the film, and we knew they were bringing two and three rushers, so it was just a lack of execution on those short routes and kind of reading where we're supposed to go with the ball,” Granata said. “A lot of that's on us because we did get that film, and we did think we prepared the right way.”
Granata saw the loss as a learning experience for his young team, which only fields nine upperclassmen out of 20 roster spots.
“Just taking this learning experience from this tougher first half of the schedule, hopefully carrying that into our tournament, and then that second half, we should see that progression and that success coming through,” Granata said.
Corona del Sol (2-0) will play at Gilbert (1-1) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and the Warriors (0-2) will play at Xavier College Prep (3-0) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
