Paradise Valley football coach Donnie Yantis said after Thursday night’s game that his No. 1 receiver, Jordan Brown, was OK.

Brown tried to get up after receiving a hit to his back during Thursday’s game against Liberty. But the receiver was told to remain lying down until the paramedics arrived to take him to a local hospital.

“He (Brown) is alright,” Yantis said. “It’s for precautionary reasons. He was feeling some pressure on his back.”

Brown’s injury occurred after he received a pass with 7:13 remaining in the game.

Paradise Valley also lost another key player in the second half. Yantis said starting safety/running back Riley Thompson was dehydrated and didn't play during most of the second half.

Bennett delivers

Liberty’s defense did bend but didn’t break during its team’s 58-31 win Thursday at Paradise Valley.

However, Liberty’s defense did help break Paradise Valley’s spirit thanks to a couple of big plays by senior safety Chad Bennett. Bennett intercepted Boise State-bound quarterback Ryan Finley twice.

His second interception -- after after a tipped pass -- helped set up a touchdown that gave Liberty a 51-31 lead in the third quarter. Bennett then scored his team’s next touchdown after returning a punt 80 yards.

“(Chad) is a heck of a kid,” Liberty’s defensive coordinator Mark Smith said. “He’s the heart and soul of our defense. But we have a lot like him.”
