Say goodbye to power rankings and hello to team seedings

Power rankings are out for team sports.

Seedings are in.

Welcome to the new world of seeding Arizona’s high school teams for postseason purposes. The partnership the Arizona Interscholastic Association and aia365.com struck with Maxpreps this year allowed the organizations to not only share content but also an algorithm Maxpreps developed to seed teams.

Representatives of Maxpreps, one of the nation’s leaders in high school sports coverage, first presented the algorithm to the AIA during a June meeting with the AIA’s power rankings committee. On Tuesday, during the AIA’s monthly executive board meeting, the board approved the use of the algorithm.

Along with the algorithm, content such as videos, stories and stats that are published by Maxpreps and aia365.com will also be shared by each organization. This year, the AIA and aia365.com also reached an agreement to share content with two of the state's news/sports leaders, azcentral.com and arizonasports.com.

“We work with 12 other state high school associations, but what we are doing with Arizona is cutting edge in terms of what we are putting together,” said Chad Downey, Maxpreps’ vice president of marketing and business development. “The real goal and idea is to give coaches a single point of entry to put scores in and publish them across multiple sites and maximize the recognition for players, coaches and teams.

“What we’ve woven together here is unique. There’s nothing really like it across the country.”
