Fundraising events help power Brophy Prep sports

March 19, 2026 by Ian King, Arizona State University

Brophy College Preparatory is an institution with resounding community. Between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, 22 donations of $100,000 or more were made to Brophy College Preparatory. The 1986 and ‘89 graduating classes alone at Brophy donated more than $1 million each within the calendar year, emphasizing the strength of its community.

If they’re not donating through a checkbook, the school hosts four annual fundraising events that are “important ways to support Brophy,” and “directed to the area of most need for that academic year,” according to Heather Chapman, leader of the Brophy Advancement Office that oversees the fundraisers, on the Brophy website.

The fundraising event that’s tailored most towards athletics is the Power Breakfast. The event involves a high-profile guest speaker who shares how their education and life experiences have helped them attain professional success.

The most recent event occurred on Jan. 28, where they welcomed eight-time NBA all star, and two-time MVP Steve Nash, a Phoenix Suns legend. Personalities such as J.J. Watt and Jonathan Gannon have appeared at the breakfast in other years.

Shaff said that proceeds from 2026’s breakfast went directly to the upcoming renovation of the Robson Gymnasium scheduled for this summer. However, the funds are dispersed to whatever Brophy President Bob Ryan “deems necessary”.

“Two years ago, we did a big renovation at the (Graham Family) Sports Campus, where we renovated the scoreboard, track and artificial turf,” assistant athletic director Steve Shaff said. “Last year, we re-did the baseball turf — those came under the power breakfast.”

The longest tenured fundraising event of the four is the Golf Classic.

The 44th annual tournament that took place on Dec. 11, charging $575 per golfer, or $2,200 as entry for four at a slight discount. An attached list of sponsorship opportunities for the tournament ranges from beverage cart and tee box sponsors, to being sponsors of the whole tournament.

Prices range from $250 to $15,000 depending on “estimated publicity and potential for brand recognition,” according to the director of annual and leadership giving at Brophy, Camryn Friel on the Brophy website.

Large amounts of the sponsorship costs are tax-deductible as well, which Friel says increases engagement. A $15,000 sponsorship would see nearly $12,000 of it eligible as a tax write off. A sponsorship worth $2,000 has the ability to be written off in its entirety.

The other two main fundraisers run through the advancement office are the Fashion Show and Fall Auction.

The Fashion Show is an annual celebration of the senior class, however all funds from sponsors and donations are directed to the Brophy Fund, rather than prioritizing a specific area of need. Seats to the luncheon, raffle tickets and exclusive Brophy merchandise are put up for sale, where much of it has already sold out.

The Fall Auction is also directed towards supporting the general Brophy Fund. The auction functions with a classic “paddle raise” bidding system, where prizes such as a 2025 Subaru Outback, $3,000 cash and date nights for a year are put up for grabs.

While the Brophy Fund targets the institution's most important needs, such as financial aid, athletics are a large part of Brophy Prep’s image and mission.
