A year ago, Bernie Montoya was playing football for Yuma Cibola High. But deep inside, he thought about trying something different.
So this year, he tried cross country and was glad he did.
In Saturday’s Division I state meet at Cave Creek Golf Course in north Phoenix, Montoya put on a big finishing kick to defeat Phoenix Brophy Prep star Will Firth and 2009 Class 5A Division I champ Jorge Martinez of Phoenix Alhambra.
Of his change to running, Montoya said, “I thought I would be good at the sport. I wasn’t in the best condition to start off, but got in shape pretty good and it paid off.’’
He kept pace with Firth and Montoya the entire race, even though he thought about backing off for a brief period.
“But I knew if I did that, I could not win so I had to stay with those guys,’’ he said. “You’ve just got to go with them and not let up.’’
Montoya finished 16 seconds ahead of Firth and 25 seconds ahead of Martinez.
Alhambra still managed to win a third straight team title by 10 points over Mesa Mountain View. Montoya’s Cibola team finished fifth and Firth’s Brophy team finished sixth.
In Division II, Peoria Sunrise Mountain’s Brandon Kocmoud towered over his competition, literally and figuratively. He stands about 6-foot-5 and scored a nine-second win over Rex Woodbury of Tucson Catalina Foothills. Woodbury’s team was first, Sunrise Mountain second.
Tuba City star Billy Orman, the Class 3A winner in 2009, won another crown, this in Division III, shattering the course record with a 15:03.32. The previous mark was 15:15 by Brian Schrader of Flagstaff Sinagua.
Orman, known for his big shock of hair reminiscent of the 1960s-1970s, has a strong following from is home area of northeast Arizona. Some fans wore “Go, Billy!’’ T-shirts. Another follower asked him to sign a photo that was recently in a newspaper and he did so, adding a peace sign for good measure.
He said “it is very cool to win again and have a chance to be like Brian Schrader.’’
It was a tough race on Saturday, he said.
“We (runners) kept testing each other,’’ he said.
In Division IV, Keams Canyon Hopi kept a long title streak alive.
