Seton girls repel Saguaro with 2nd-quarter onslaught

Seton Catholic's girls basketball team won't have another offensive quarter this season like the second quarter it posted Wednesday night against Saguaro.

But Lady Sentinels coach Karen Self will take what her team gave her -- a 29-point quarter where shooting was nearly perfect -- in a 56-32 triumph over a better-than-its-record-indicates Saguaro at Seton's McMahon Gymnasium.

Seton (21-3 overall and 13-0 in power-ranking games) is currently No. 1 in Division II rankings. The Lady Sentinels'  prowess is defined by its relentless man defense, but an overdose offense in the second didn't hurt.

Seton pulled away from Saguaro (13-8, 7-4 prg) after the teams were tied at 10 after the opening period. In the second period Seton sank 11-of-12 field goal attempts, A couple were runners, two were layups, one a 12-footer and the other five from three-point range. Add Seton held Saguaro to 2-of-10 shooting from the field in the quarter and the result was a commanding 39-15 lead at hafltime.

"Other than the second quarter, the game was dead even," Self said. "We got some good shots, but to shoot that well with the effort we were giving on defense  was pretty good. I told them after the first quarter we can't match baskets withn them. We kept playing good defense. This team plays its best defensively when we need them to"

Susan Spinner, who led Seton with 14 points, sank two 3s in the quarter. Anne Marie Holter tossed in seven points (finishing with nine) and Heather Heild scored six of her 12 in the period. Late in the quarter reserve guard Anabel Lopez pumped in eight points, hitting a cople threes and two free throws. She finished with 13, getting Seton back on track in the fourth period with a leadoff three after Saguaro had cut the lead to 43-28 heading to the final quarter. Junior Julia Barcello finished with just six points, but grabbed 13 rebounds to earn her keep.

"We didn't help ourselves with the way we played defense in the second quarter," Saguaro coach Chris Young said. "They got good shots and most of the threes were uncontested. We dug a big hole.

"But we came out in the third quarter and the effort level was high. We asked a lot of them and by the end of the quarter we were pretty gassed. It left us with a big positive going forward."

Saguaro is a young team, very young. The Lady Sabercats started two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman. The roster has just two seniors .Saguaro's leading scorer, junior Casey Rarrick, finished with eight points. That's less than half her average. Fellow junior Naomi Reyes led the team with nine points, getting six in the third period when Saguaro made a mild run.

Saguaro entered the night  24th in the D-II power-rankings, which if the season was over, would barely qualifyit for the playoffs. However, most of its losses are quality losses and the Sabercats wouldy be a handful for anyone they faced in postseason. Saguaro playe a better game the last time it faced Seton in December, dropping a 60-53 decision.
