Michael Mateievich, head boys basketball coach at Chavez Academy (Detroit), told the Detroit News that he started several reserves against University Prep (Detroit) to bolster his team's experience and chemistry.

However, he did make sure that 6-foot-6, 215-pound junior Isaac Bowles also was in the starting lineup. All Bowles did was grab an amazing 38 rebounds, score 16 points and block 12 shots as his team posted a 64-58 victory. Nate Drew was high scorer with 22 points.

Mateievich pointed out, "Our team lacks height, but we make up for it with Isaac. He's our one-man wrecking crew. He played the entire game and I give him props for that."

*Dontel Highsmith poured in 49 points to lead Dowagiac (Mich.) to a 101-74 rout of Berrien Springs (Mich.).

*Vashon (St. Louis) was handed a 72-67 loss by Soldan International Studies (St. Louis) despite 47 points by 6-1 University of Iowa football recruit Derrick Mitchell. Soldan coach Justin Tatum told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "That's the first kid to score that much on me. Nothing I can do about that, he was hot."

*Bianca Quisenberry, a 5-8 senior guard, poured in 43 points — one short of her school record — to pace Tecumseh (New Carlisle, Ohio) to a 73-59 victory over Tippecanoe (Tipp City, Ohio). Eleven of her points came during a 41-second outburst in the third quarter.

*Highland (Gilbert, Ariz.) defeated Mesquite (Gilbert, Ariz.) 44-21 to give girls basketball coach Miner Webster his 700th career victory. The Arizona Republic reported that among those present that night to witness the historic milestone were his 90-year-old father and 12 grandchildren.
