Pinnacle boys basketball gives starting spot to manager with muscular dystrophy

Photo by Mark JonesBrandon Wechsler earned a spot in Pinnacle's starting lineup Friday night – which isn't easy to do. The Pioneers were 30-4 last season and are 16-6 this season behind Division I recruits Dorian Pickens and Drew Bender.
Wechsler, who has a form of muscular dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair, was allowed to start Friday’s home game with O’Connor. He wore No. 42.
Pinnacle’s Dorian Pickens controlled the tip and handed the ball to Wechsler, who also set a screen for teammate Drew Bender. His moment on the court was complete.
"I've been waiting for this for my whole life," Wechsler told the East Valley Tribune. "It was so surreal."
An overflow crowd gave Wechsler a standing ovation and many of the students held up his picture.
According to the newspaper, Wechsler has either talked to or met Tim Tebow, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin over the last week. Former Phoenix Suns star Tom Chambers was on hand.
"He’s a wonderful boy, and not just because he’s my kid," said Lenny Wechsler, Brandon’s father. "Everybody feels it. That's why we're all here, to pay tribute to a kid like that."
Once play resumed, Pinnacle (17-6) won the game 72-44.
