Charest, Alvelo, Hein, Toben and Padilla Selected as Max Preps/NFCA National H.S. Players of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For their outstanding contributions during games occurring over April 15-21, Kristen Charest of Cheney RVT (Manchester, Conn.) High School, Taran Alvelo of Bloom-Carroll (Carroll, Ohio) High School, Rebecca Hein of Vestavia Hills (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) High School, Sarah Beth Toben of Reicher Catholic (Waco, Texas) High School and Keileen Padilla of Flagstaff (Flagstaff, Ariz.) High School have been selected as the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week.

EAST REGION: A junior center fielder/infielder for the Beavers, Charest had an incredible week at the plate, hitting .684 (13-for-19) with 12 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, three HR's and 17 RBIs, while also tossing seven innings of relief from the circle with seven K's. She was a perfect 4-for-4 and hit for the cycle while knocking in eight runs in a 25-4 rout of Prince RVT (Conn.) and was an amazing 6-for-7 with four runs scored, a two-bagger, two HR's and five RBIs during a comeback, 21-20 triumph over University (Conn.). Overall, she is now hitting .645 with 20 tallies, four HR's and 24 RBIs.

NORTH REGION: A sophomore pitcher for Bloom-Carroll H.S. in Carroll, Ohio, Alvelo contributed in a major way at both the plate and the circle this past week. She hit .500 (9-for-18) with four runs scored, three HR's and seven RBIs, while going 5-1 overall with a 0.75 ERA and 82 strikeouts over just 37.1 innings of work. Included in her impressive efforts was a no-hitter with 15 K's during a 4-0 win over Circleville (Ohio), a 17-strikeout day while going 5-for-5 at the dish with two HR's and five RBI in a 13-3 victory over Trinity Christian (Pa.) and 17 K's in a 6-4 triumph against River View (Ohio). For the year Alvelo is hitting .538 with eight HR's and 15 RBIs and boasts a 12-1 pitching mark with 177 strikeouts over 87 frames.

SOUTH REGION: A senior pitcher for the Rebels, Hein helped her Vestavia Hills H.S. squad to a perfect record over eight contests this past week, going 7-0 from the circle with a miniscule 0.53 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 40 innings of work. She struck out 11 while firing a no-hitter during a 3-0 victory over Enterprise (Ala.), punched out 10 in a 4-1 victory against Shelby County (Ala.) and K'ed eight while tossing all nine innings of an extra-inning, 3-1 win against Pelham (Ala.). On the season, Hein is an impressive 27-3 with 250 K's over 189.1 innings.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION: A senior pitcher for the Cougars, Toben was a perfect 4-0 last week from the circle with a 0.30 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 23 innings, while also hitting a robust .667 (8-for-12) at the dish with three runs scored, three doubles, a triple and four RBIs. She was 3-for-4 with two doubles and struck out 13 during a one-hit, 6-0 blanking of Parish Episcopal (Texas) and K'ed 11 in a 2-0 triumph against Bruceville-Eddy (Texas). For the year Toben is 17-2 overall with 209 strikeouts in 106 frames of work and is hitting .582 with 19 doubles and 19 RBIs.

WEST REGION: A senior for the Eagles, Padilla batted .786 (11-for-14) with 13 runs scored, three doubles, two HR's, five stolen bases and 13 RBIs over four contests. She posted at least two hits in each of Flagstaff High's match-ups last week and totaled four RBIs in each of her team's victories over Page (Ariz.), Mojave (Ariz.) and Red Rock (Ariz.). Overall, Padilla is hitting an impressive .658 for the year with 15 two-baggers, four triples, 14 steals, six HR's and 36 RBIs.

The MaxPreps/NFCA High School Players of the Week will be announced on NFCA.org every Monday during the spring season, with one representative chosen from each of five separate high school regions. During the fall campaign, just a single player will be selected representing all participating regions.
