If a team wants to make a playoff run, one way to do it is post zeroes all week.

Basha's baseball team did just that, finishing off its regular season Wednesday with its second shutout in three days and likely earning a playoff berth with a 5-0 win over Highland in a Division I game at Basha High.

Basha (16-10 overall, 9-9 power-ranking games) received a three-hit, complete game shutout from junior Jesus Daal. On Monday in another must-win game, senior Austin Casillas blanked playoff-bound Gilbertona one-hitter  with five innings of work in a 10-0 triumph shortened to five by the 10-run rule.

Basha got a home run and double from standout Jamie Westbrook, but it was a four-run uprising in the third off Highland starter Ethan Evanko that gave the Bears plenty of breathing room. Westbrook homered to left, his 10th of the season, to begin the frame. Garrett Doane, Ivan Sanchez and Daal delivered RBI later in the inning. Evanko was sharp other than the third. The senior left-hander went five innings and struck out eight without issuing a walk. Highland finished its season 15-10, 10-8 prg.

Both teams entered the game with the chance at reaching postsseason with a win. Basha began Wednesday at No. 25 in the power rankings -- just .09 point behind No. 24 Valley Vista. Valley Vista dropped an 11-6 decision to No. 7 Millennium in its final regular season game on Wednesday. Basha was .13 points back of No. 23 Trevor Browne, which finished play on Tuesday. Basha could jump a couple spots, but at least one and should qualify for state. No. 26 Corona del Sol was .10 behind Valley Vista, but the Aztecs wrapped up their season Tuesday and likely would not gain enough to reach the No. 24 spot.
