Errors doom Corona del Sol, Tolleson in D-I baseball

State baseball tournament errors get magnified.

Tolleson and Corona del Sol were on the wrong end of that lesson Thursday. The good news for those teams is that they’ll continue to play at least for one more day but this time in the losers' bracket, where the margin for error shrinks even more.

Desert Mountain and Pinnacle also didn’t play mistake-free baseball, but they were after victories, not beauty points, and they accomplished their missions before exiting Tempe Diablo Stadium. Corona del Sol’s sixth error in its third round game allowed Desert Mountain to walk off with 5-4 win, and Pinnacle used three Tolleson errors in the one inning to score six runs in Pinnacle’s 9-2 victory.

Pinnacle’s Parker Manahan and Tolleson’s Gabe Quintero were locked in a pitchers’ duel until the fifth inning, when Tolleson loaded the bases thanks in part to a couple of miscues by Pinnacle. But Tolleson, the No. 5 seed, failed to capitalize and scored just one run to take a 2-1 lead.

Pinnacle on the other hand made Tolleson pay for its fielding mistakes in the fifth inning, when Pinnacle scored six runs, highlighted by Brock Hartley’s stand up three RBI triple.

“If it was a video game, that (fifth inning) would have been the time when you hit the reset button,” Tolleson coach Scott Richardson said.

Tolleson only allowed five hits, but its errors and Manahan were too much to overcome.

Manahan pitched a complete game, scattered six hits, and also went 2 for 4 with three RBI’s.

No. 24-seeded Corona del Sol is finally healthy and was performing more like a No. 1 seed after defeating two higher seeded teams in the first two rounds. Against Desert Mountain, Corona del Sol trailed 4-1, but a defensive gem and clutch hitting kept Corona del Sol in the game.

Corona del Sol second baseman Jeff Carter kept Desert Mountain from increasing its 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when he made a running catch in shallow right field and then threw home to get a runner who was tagging from third.

In Corona del Sol’s next at bat, it scored two runs with two outs. With his team still trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh with two outs, Carter hit a stand up triple and scored when Desert Mountain’s second baseman, Corey Wheaton, mishandled a chopper hit by Desert Mountain’s No. 2 hitter.

But Wheaton atoned for that mistake with a heads-up play to score the run that ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wheaton led off that inning with a walk and eventually reached third base after a batter was hit and No. 2 hitter Cody Erickson executed his first sacrifice bunt of the season.

Corona del Sol then intentionally walked Pinnacle’s brawny catcher, Ben Rodriguez, to load the bases with one out. That brought up Desert Mountain’s cleanup hitter, Jake McAdams, who had a full count when Corona del Sol threw away its chance of winning the game and continuing its Cinderella run with the lowest seed in the tournament.

After the third ball was called to give McAdams a full count, Corona del Sol’s catcher then threw the ball back to his pitcher, but the ball got away from the pitcher.

Wheaton then alertly made a dash for home and slid in with the game-winning run.

“He (Wheaton) is one of the smartest players we got,” Desert Mountain coach Brian Stephenson said. “The only way you can do that is if you are not taking off (every play).”

No. 1 seed Desert Mountain and No. 4 seed Pinnacle will return to Tempe Diablo on Saturday to see which team advances to the semifinals.

Tolleson and Corona del Sol also will face off on Saturday, but they’ll play at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in an elimination game.
