Ironwood Ridge continues stellar athletic season

Ironwood Ridge opened the 2012-2013 season with a marquee state title winning the Division II football championship. The school also finished fourth in D-II boys and girls cross country and reached the final four in D-II girls volleyball. It's strong wrestling program three-peated as D-II state champs in February.

Spring isn't over yet, but sports teams and individuals from this season have added on to a highly successful athletic year. Here's the spring scorecard for Ironwood Ridge as of Wednesday May 8:

Boys tennis: Team champions with victory over Notre Dame Prep, 5-4. Singles runner-up Alex Bose. Doubles runner-up Cody Petford and Adam Knox.

Girls tennis: Team state runner-up falling to Catalina Foothills, 5-4. Singles champ Sara Brown. Doubles runner-up Marissa Baca and Kelsey Brown.

Softball: Final four. Ironwood Ridge faces Canyon del Oro Wednesday May 8 in D-II losers' bracket game with winner earning the right to meet Sunrise Mountain-Greenway loser on Friday May 10.

Baseball: Final four. Ironwood Ridge faces Sunnyslope Thursday May 9, the only two unbeaten teams in D-II state tourney. A loss Thursday to Sunnyslope sends the  Nighthawks to an elimination game on Saturday May 11 against either Notre Dame or Sahuaro. A win Thursday over Sunnyslope advances the Nighthawks to the championship game on May 14.
