Spring title flags raised; some baseball, softball remains

Here is a quick look at some of the state championship competition over the weekend . . .
Baseball
Division I – Two-time defending champion Scottsdale Chaparral advanced to Tuesday’s (May 14) title game with a 7-5 victory in eight innings over Tucson High on Saturday night (May 11) at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Chaparral will face Scottsdale Desert Mountain for the crown on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Diablo.
Division II – This elimination game also went eight innings and Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep emerged with a 3-2 victory over Tucson Ironwood Ridge.
Notre Dame will meet defending champion Phoenix Sunnyslope for the title on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Camelback Ranch in Glendale.
Division III – Fountain Hills scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Tucson Empire 5-4, and captured the state championship at Surprise Stadium.
Division IV – Tucson Desert Christian outlasted Phoenix Christian 11-9 for the state title at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The game featured 20 walks and eight errors.
Boys spring golf
Chandler Valley Christian grabbed the team title in Division III and Phoenix Scottsdale Christian’s Chris Petefish earned medalist honors for the second straight year.
Softball
Division III -- Goodyear Estrella Foothills’ hitters were in a groove on Saturday night, producing a big 12-2 win over Winslow for the state title at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in north Phoenix.
Allison Montano led the way for Estrella Foothills with three hits, including a bases-loaded triple.
Division IV – San Manuel earned its first title since 1994, scoring four times in the top of the seventh and holding off a late rally by Phoenix Northwest Christian for a 5-4 victory.
Track and field
Division I boys – Phoenix Brophy Prep outdistanced Tempe Corona del Sol to win its second team title in three years.
Yuma Cibola’s Bernie Montoya won his third straight 1,600-meter title.
Division I girls – Ky Westbrook helped Chandler High win its eighth straight team championship by setting a state record in the 200-meter dash (23.39 seconds).
Division II boys – Glendale Raymond S. Kellis won the team title, with Peoria Liberty and Queen Creek deadlocked at No. 2.
Raymond S. Kellis Deon Parks won the 200 and the team won the 400-meter relay.
Division II girls – The versatility of seniors Alyssa Thompson and Michaela Crunkleton Wilson combined for 70 of Tucson Salpointe’s 88 points in easily winning the title.
Division III boys – Gilbert Williams Field earned the first state title in school history, defeating Gilbert Higley and Snowflake.
Division III girls – Cottonwood Mingus won its second straight title as Heather Calandra won both the shot put and discus events.
Division IV boys – Phoenix Arizona Lutheran won the team title over Morenci and Chandler Valley Christian.
San Manuel’s Wayne Newman won both hurdles events.
Division IV girls – Tempe Prep finished second to Tucson Pusch Ridge Christian in 2012 but turned the tables this time around to win the title.
