Highland girls basketball coach Miner Webster did not guide the Lady Hawks to another state title last year, but winning his 700th career game and adding one more 30-plus win season earned him regard enough for a national coaching honor.

Webster was tabbed for the honor by the National High School Coaches Association National High School Girls' Basketbll Coach of the year for the 2012-2013 season. Highland posted a 32-3 record and advanced to the state Division I semifinals before falling to eventual state runner-up Pinnacle. A few weeks earlier in the season, Webster notched his 700th career win with a win over Gilbert Mesquite.

The bulk of Webster's wins have come at Highland, where he has coached the last 20 seasons since it opened and became the second high school in the Gilbert district. Webster has six state titles to his credit at Highland and two at Gilbert High, where he began his girls basketball coaching career. Webster has compiled a 712-107 career record, good for second in Arizona all-time behind retired Winslow coach Don Petranovich.
