The Phoenix Greenway baseball magic continued for one more game for some of its senior players on Sunday as third baseman Cody Wescott hit a three-run home run to pace the North to a 13-3 victory over the South in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at Surprise Stadium.
Wescott, who helped Greenway capture the Division II state championship, was named the game’s MVP. He hit his home run in the sixth inning.
The two All-Star teams combined for 26 hits, 16 by the North. The North also benefitted from five South errors.
Greenway pitcher Tyler Frost started the game for the North, gave up a run and then exited after one inning. His teammates bailed him out with four runs in the second inning. The win went to Scottsdale Saguaro’s Nick Meservey.
Frost led off the game with a walk and re-entered the game in the top of the ninth, getting a bloop single and scoring the North’s final run.
Greenway first baseman Sean Wagner was 0 for 1 but drew a walk in the fourth inning to force in a run, one of three runs for the North in the inning.
Goodyear Desert Edge outfielder Pete Acosta had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the North and suffered a shoulder injury on a head-first slide into first base.
Outfielder Luis Gonzalez of Tucson Catalina Foothills led the South at the plate. He had a leadoff triple off Frost and scored for his team’s first run in the first inning, and doubled in a run in the fourth.
