Hat trick by Teran helps Notre Dame remain unbeaten

It was senior night for the girls soccer team from Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep, and what better way to celebrate than to have one of the three honorees score a hat trick?
Alex Teran found the net three times and Maddie Reisdorf scored twice as the Saints marched into the Class 4A Division II state tournament with a 7-0 victory over visiting Phoenix Paradise Valley on Wednesday night (Jan. 26).
Notre Dame finished its regular season at 18-0, the first time the school has gone through a regular season without a loss.
The team will open play in the state tournament on Feb. 1 with a likely No. 2 seed. Flagstaff is the projected top seed.
Saints coach Scot Bemis knows Flagstaff is formidable and stands in the way of his team’s attempt to win its second title (it won in 2009).
“I have scouted them and I know they are a very good team. They are very deep,’’ he said. “But we can’t even begin to think about them right now. If we do, we might sell ourselves short.’’
There is no shortage of possible scorers for Notre Dame.
Teran is one of the best. She does not simply wait for her teammates to set her up. She goes and gets the ball herself, often digging it out of the corners or tapping it away from opponents.
“It’s a good feeling to be able to do so well in this last home game,’’ Teran said.
“We’ve had a good season so far and all of us have worked really hard. We want to get another one (championship).’’
These last few games perhaps mean more to a player like Teran. She plans to go to college (Auburn, Oregon or Arizona) but she likely will not play soccer, preferring to concentrate on a medical career.
Goalkeeper Taylor Mogel and Reisdorf’s sister, also named Taylor, also were honored as seniors.
Mogel picked up her 16th shutout of the season. She rarely was challenged in this one.
Teran gave the Saints a 1-0 lead with her first goal at the 13:12 mark of the first half. Maddie Reisdorf scored her first with 2:54 left and Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead at the half.
If Paradise Valley had hopes of getting back into it in the second half, they were quickly doused when Teran got her second goal just a minute after play resumed, and the goals continued to flow.
