Assistants to ADs help events run smoothly

The staging of a high school athletic event just doesn’t happen by itself.
There are numerous logistical issues to be addressed, and last-minute details and/or changes often come up. It takes people with good instincts and an extra amount of drive to make everything run smoothly.
The schools’ athletic directors usually are the ones who take this on, but sometimes they have assistants who put forth their efforts.
I encountered one of the able assistants on Wednesday as I prepared to report on a girls soccer match hosted by Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep.
I was greeted by Lorin Marchese, the assistant to NDP athletic director Monica Barrett. Lorin asked me if I had any questions, then excused herself to facilitate a ceremony honoring the seniors on the soccer team. Once play started, she made sure the match ran smoothly.
Athletics administration is in Lorin’s blood. Her father, Vinnie, is assistant principal at NDP and was athletic director at Glendale Deer Valley.
Lorin hopes to become a high school athletic director or a college athletic administrator.
“I just love sports. I have been around them all my life,’’ she said.
It’s a great tribute to her father and to athletics in general. Some people follow their parents and become coaches. Others like Lorin are branching out.
She and all of the assistants to the athletic directors do a great job.
