It had been a tough season for the football team at Cesar Chavez (Laveen, Ariz.) up until Friday.
The Champions had opened with six straight losses and had given up 250 points in the process.
Chavez had a bone to pick and they took it out on winless Maryvale, recording a 61-6 victory while recording an astonishing 28 sacks, according to statistics provided by coaches to MaxPreps.
Among those were 10 sacks — a fantastic season for any defensive player — by 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior outside linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. He led the team with 14 tackles and forced three fumbles, two of which he recovered.
Junior Nathan Guzman added 12 tackles, and seniors Keenan Riggins and Forrest Sussex added 10 tackles each. Riggins added five sacks, while Sussex had C.J. Hernandez added three apiece.
All told, the 28 sacks totaled 223 yards worth of losses for Maryvale. Riggins, by the way, intercepted two passes and returned them a total of 128 yards while scoring one touchdown.
There are few national records kept for sacks by either a team or player, but both Chavez' team total and the 10 recorded by Rashed Jr. would have to be among the most ever in a single game.
