Phoenix Desert Vista standout Danielle Jones put in a repeat performance and captured her second state championship in a row with a time of 17:26 Saturday afternoon at the Division I cross country championships.

In doing so, the senior paced her team to a state championship with a combined score of 30. Phoenix Xavier came in second with a score of 83 and Gilbert Highland finished in third place with a score of 140.

On the boy's side, Tempe Corona del Sol senior Marcus Wheeler put in a time of 15:36 to outpace Gilbert Mesquite standout Tyler Day by five seconds.

"I felt really good coming into this race," said Wheeler. "I thought about this race all summer and all weekend. It took a lot of heart over the last 200 meters but I pulled it off."

Wheeler finished in third place last year.

The boys of Desert Vista took first place (46) to sweep the team titles. Mesa Mountain View was second (60) and Corona del Sol came in third (126).
