No. 10 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge pulled off the only upset in the first round of the Division II state playoffs on Tuesday. The Nighthawks defeated No. 7 Gilbert Williams Field 5-1 to move on to the quarterfinal round to be played next Tuesday.
All other seeds held form as No. 1 Tucson Catalina Foothills, No. 3 Tucson Salpointe and No. 6 Nogales won their team matches. No. 2 Phoenix Shadow Mountain defeated No. 15 Canyon del Oro 7-2.
Ironwood Ridge will travel to Shadow Mountain next week. Catalina Foothills will host No. 8 Glendale Deer Valley and Salpointe will host Nogales which means one team from Southern Arizona is guaranteed a semifinal spot.
There were a host of Southern Arizona matchups in Division III action with No. 2 Tucson Desert Christian knocking out No. 15 Sahuarita 6-0, No. 3 St. David beating No. 14 Safford and No. 6 Oro Valley Pusch Ridge taking care of No. 11 Benson.
With the field cut in half in the quarterfinal round, Desert Christian will host No. 7 Scottsdale Prep and St. David will host Pusch Ridge. Top-seeded Thatcher will host No. 9 Goodyear Estrella Foothills.
Team playoffs for the girls will start on Wednesday.
