MaxPreps/NFCA Players of the Week for May 11-17, 2015

Katerina Lagace of Newington (Conn.) went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 29 strikeouts, and batted .750 in being named the MaxPreps/NFCA player of the Week from the East Region.


LOUISVILLE, Ky.
Katerina Lagace of Newington (Newington, Conn.), Savanna Copeland of Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.), Hailey Wood of Princeton (Princeton, N.C.), Malin Miracle of East Jessamine (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Reyna Carranco of Oxnard (Oxnard, Calif.) were selected MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week, respectively, announced on Monday for games played May 11-May 17.

East
Lagace was 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 29 strikeouts in the circle and batted .750 to help Newington go 4-0 and extend its winning streak to seven games. The sophomore hurler did not allow a run in three complete-game victories, while walking two and scattering eight hits. She fanned 10 batters in a pair of two-hit shutouts against Farmington and closed out with a four-hit shutout with nine punchouts versus Hall. Lagace added four two-hit games with a double, triple, four RBI and three runs scored. In her only game that she did not pitch, Lagace went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBI in a win over New Britain.

North
Copeland belted four home runs, slugged 1.917 and knocked in 10 runs as she powered Hamilton Southeastern to three wins last week. She hit .833 (10-for-12) and added a double and nine runs scored. Opening the week, Copeland generated a double, long ball and five RBI in a victory over Anderson. She followed that with another three-hit games with three runs and a RBI versus Richmond. The sophomore closed out the monstrous week, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three home runs, four RBI and four runs scored against Batesville.

South
Wood tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts, including a perfect game and struck out 28 in two starts last week. In her perfect game against Manteo, she went six innings and struck out 15 of 18 batters she faced. She also helped herself out at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. In her second appearance, she surrendered just three hits and a walk, while fanning 13 in a 4-0 triumph over East Carteret. For the week, her opponents batted just .069 and reached base just four times.

South Central
Miracle reached base safely in her first eight plate appearances and finished the week batting .800 with a double, four home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored in three victories for East Jessamine last week. She slugged an astronomical 2.100 and posted a .833 on base percentage. The junior infielder opened her big week by going 4-for-4 with a double, long ball, four RBI and three runs versus rival West Jessamine. She continued her perfection into the next contest against Bourbon County in which she was 3-for-3, all home runs, with four RBI and three runs scored.

West

By homering in five of her 10 at bats and batting .800 (8-for-10), Carranco played a key role in Oxnard extending it winning streak six games after a 3-0 week. The junior second baseman added a double, eight RBI and seven runs scored, while slugging a mind-boggling 2.500 for the three games. After homering and knocking in two runs in the opener against Hueneme, Carranco finished was 7-for-7 with four long balls, two in each game, and six RBI in her final two games. In game two against Hueneme, she was 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored. The left-handed power hitter hit a pair of solo home runs in a 3-0 win over Rio Mesa in the final game of the week.

The MaxPreps/NFCA High School Players of the Week are announced on NFCA every Monday during the spring season, with one representative chosen from each of five separate high school regions. During the fall campaign, just a single player is selected representing all participating regions.
