Wrestling: Safford secures D-3 crown

Safford and Morenci put the wraps on the 2016 wrestling season Saturday winning the Division III and Division IV team titles, respectively, at Prescott Valley Event Center in Prescott Valley.

Safford controlled D-III from start to finish and totaled 179 points for its eighth championship in the sport. Seven of those have come in the last 12 years. The Bulldogs last one was in 2010. Chino Valley (128.5), clocking in with three individual champs, edged Amphitheater (128) for runner-up honors. Show Low (124.5) was fourth and produced three champs.

Leading the way for Safford were its champions -- two freshmen -- Byron Finch (120-pounds) and Dawon Andrews (145). Finch finished 52-4 and Andrews capped his season at 54-0. He pinned all four of his opponents in the tournament. Safford had 10 wrestlers place overall. Three finished third -- Zach Sias (132), Damian Vizcarra (145) and Gabrilel Romero (HWT). Chanse Rios (138) was fourth, Hayden Finch (170), Bailey Sanford (182) and Chase Umphres (220) were fifth and Lazaro Lombillo (113) was sixth.

Chino Valley's champs are Kendall Foster (126), Gary Medevielle (160) and Spencer Coffin (170). Amphi's trio of champs featured two repeat titleists -- Yarhoki Ardiva (132) and Kyle Rodriguez (195). Cris Sanchez won the heavyweight crown. The rest of the individual champs: Walden Grove's Diego Guererro, (106), Desert View's Jacob Frias (113), Show Low's Jasckons Allen (138), a repeat champ; Coconino's Uriah Dobell (170) and Cesar Chavez's Damian Mendez (220).

D-IV

Morenci cracked the 200-point mark in taking home the D-IV title, its sixth overall and first since 2005. Morenci totaled 208.5 points with Winslow (146) was a distant second. Next up were St. Johns (134.5), Benson (132) and Camp Verde (102.5).

Morenci had 11 placers led by three champions -- Derek Waltrip (106), Frankie Gonzales (170) and Christian White (182). White repeated as champ.Dylan Workman (113-3rd), Mark Roybal (120-4th), Nicholas Carrasco (126-4th), Domic Guzzo (132-6th), Kevin Barnett (145-5th), Darrin Gonzales (152-2nd), Cody Rivera (195-3rd) and Jordan Arvizo (HWT-3rd) were the others.

Camp Verde, the D-IV team champ the last three years, had two champions -- Hayden Uhler (126), who won his third straight title, and Matt Mejia (132). Mogollon also had multiple champs with Brock Slade (160) and Baylend Stephens (HWT). The other individual champions  were Thatcher's Kason Bryce (113), Arizona Lutheran's Isai Barajas (120), St. Johns Dawson Avila (138), Snowflake's Cole Mortensen (145), Willcox's Parker Osterman (152), Winslow's Ahli Foster (195) and Benson's Perrin Maakestad (220). Mortensen was also a repeat champion.
