Hamilton's attempt at a second upset in the Division I boys basketball tournament never got untracked Saturday night. Mesa Mountain View saw to that.
The fifth-seeded Toros used a balanced attack to take control early and eased to a 54-33 victory over No. 21 Hamilton at Toro Gym. Mountain View (17-8) moves to the quarterfinals on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at ASU against the quarterfinals on Wednesday (Feb. 24) against No. 4 Gilbert at 2:30 p.m. at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena. Gilbert knocked off No. 13 Dobson, 74-65.
Mountain View led wire to wire. Hamilton was focused on making sure high-scoring guard Tommy Kuhse wasn't going to bury them with threes and did a good job defending him on the perimeter. Instead, Mountain View found other ways to score. Six different players tallied in the opening quarter for Mountain View. The Toros pulled out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter with John Trendler and Zane Jowaiszas hitting the offensive boards for points and reserve Jayton Brown manning the three-point line.
Brown became the offensive star of the opening half, netting all 11 of his points, including two more treys in the second period. Mountain View's lead grew to 32-18 at halftime.
"I liked the way John and Zane came out for us," Mountain View coach Gary Ernst said. "All our guys gave us good minutes. Nick (Sessions) came in and played good defense. Jayton picked us up with his threes. I like balance. The better the balance, the better we'll be. But I still don't mind those nights when Tommy goes off. He's been so hot lately. His shot looked a little funny tonight."
Kuhse still ended up leading Mountain View with a modest 12 points (only 1 of 6 from three-point range) followed by Brown's 11. Zowaiszas checked in with 7 points, Trendler and Matt Clark chipped in six points apiece. All eight of Ernst's regular-playing rotation scored.
Hamilton (10-18) closed its first campaign under new coach Doug Harris, who was hoping for a good start from his team. The Huskies opened the tournament Thursday night with an upset of Harris' former team, Desert Vista.
Hamilton wasn't able to make any kind of run in the second half. The Huskies made 2 of 12 shots from the field and dropping the third period 14-4, was pretty much the end of the line. Chance Brewington led Hamilton with 10 points. Tyson Brown, James Scoggin and Ben Stefaniak had five points each.
