Arizona Baseball Leaders: Santa Rita's Rickey Borquez
April 12, 2016 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365
These are the current stat leaders for baseball with just about two weeks left in the regular season. These lists fluctuate daily depending on updated stats. Although I have only included the top three for each category, one name that will come out high on the strikeout list at the end of the season will be Santa Rita junior pitcher Rickey Borquez.
Santa Rita (2-13) is having a difficult time producing wins but Borquez has 61 strikeouts in only six outings. That total includes two 14-strikeout performances.
Borquez could have played at several different high schools in the area but instead chose to stay home to represent the Eagles.
"I go out and just try to pitch better than I did before," the right hander explained. "Just give my team a chance."
Borquez credits increased accuracy and a few extra miles per hour on his delivery with his curveball being his top pitch. One would think over 10 strikeouts a game would produce more wins but that has not been the case for Santa Rita.
The Eagles went four seasons without winning a game (2011-14) and have only won 11 games in nine years but Borquez would like to see that change.
"I want to get better for my team," Borquez added. "I don't want to los every game. We are better than that."
