Baseball: O'Connor hangs on to nip Perry, 5-4

Can two pitchers get a save? Statistically, no.

Technically they did for Sandra Day O'Connor's baseball team Thursday as the Eagles staved off a late Perrry surge to edge the Pumas, 5-4, in a Division I matchup of top-six teams at O'Connor.

"That was a great baseball game, the kind fans want to see," Sandra Day O'Connor coach Jeff Baumgartner said. "There's not a hole in their lineup, and they showed it as the game wore on. We had to work for the outs. And then it ends with a great defensive play by (Austin) Wiskow)."

Keegan McCarville, the second reliever called on by Baumgarner to slow Perry's bats, got the final out in the sixth to keep SDO ahead, 5-4. McCarville spelled reliever Austin Wiskow, who surrendered two runs in the sixth after getting the first two outs taking over for starter Ryan Alexander. Wiskow switched places with McCarville at second base when the latter took over for the former.

McCarville, who also checked in with three hits and an RBI, looked sharp in his 1 1/3 innings of work, but alternated an out then hit in the seventh that saw Perry put runners at the corners with two out. No. 9 hitter Tayt Smith squared up an 0-1 pitch, lining it seemingly over Wiskow's head at second. Wiskow's used all the spring he could muster and  snared it as he came down with the ball deep in his glove's webbing .

"That was his (Wiskow's) first action in quite awhile because of an ankle sprain," Baumgartner said. "He had just enough to get it." Wiskow hadn't played in a game since March 16.

Alexander, who managed to pitch just 1/3 of an inning last season due to a back issue, improved to 7-0 with five innings of work. He wasn't as sharp as his previous outings, but Perry had something to do with that. Alexander allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), walked three and struck out seven. He sports a 1.08 earned run average for the year. He has won all seven of his starts.

Alexander got a lift in the first inning from sophomore clean-up hitter Nolan Gorman. Gorman launched a three-run homer over the center-field batting eye. Both runners on base reached via walk from Perry starter Dustin Schorie. Gorman was 2-for-2, scored twice and drew a walk.

"We have competed well all season, but walks lately are an area we have to compete better at," Perry coach Damien Tippett said. "We've been getting behind too many guys (hitters). Their pitcher was very good. Topped out at 91 (mph), but he had a change and a good curve to go with that.

"We were right there, but their second baseman made an unbelievable catch to end it."

Perry outhit SDO, 11-8. Eight of Perry's starters had at least one hit. led by Wacy Crenshaw, Trevor Hauver and Cody Holtz (two hits each).

No. 6 O'Connor, which had an 18-game winning streak broken in a nine-inning, 3-1 loss to Sunrise Mountain on Tuesday, improved to 22-4 overall and 11-2 in power-ranking games. No. 4 Perry dropped to 19-6 overall, 10-3 power-ranking games. Both teams are in the thick of their section title races. Perry is tied with Hamilton a half-game back of Basha in Section 1.  O'Connor is in first in Section 2 by a half-game over Mountain Ridge.
