The 2nd Annual GARB Athletics/OC Sports Southern Arizona High School All-Star Series presented by the Kino Baseball League continued Tuesday night at the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

About three dozen baseball standouts from Southern Arizona took part in the Division II senior game with Team Teal pulling out a 13-6 win over Team Copper. Former Cienega head coach Tony Gabusi led Team Copper and Sunnyside head coach Gabe Moraga was in charge of Team Teal.

Copper took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Rincon/UHS standout Alfredo Villa go things started with a leadoff double and then Canyon del Oro standout Mason Gavre followed with a single. Jonathan Deeble (Sahuaro) came up with a groundout RBI to score Villa and Nick Tinsley (Marana) scored Gavre later in the inning.

Teal tied things up in the top of the fourth on a single from Max Christoff (Sabino), an RBI double from Nick Estrella (Ironwood Ridge) and an RBI double by Robbie Campillo (Salpointe).

It turned into a game of multiple extra-base hits highlighted by a few shots to the fence in the major-league park. Campillo came up with one of those blasts to give Teal a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. His shot came up a couple feet short of the fence but it was still long enough to score Estrella for the brief lead.

Campillo would finish the game with two doubles, a triple and four RBI to lead Team Teal. Estrella went 4-for-5 on the night with an RBI double.

“It was fun playing with these guys,” Campillo said. “I haven’t played with some of them in a long time but I felt I was dialed in at the plate.”

Campillo is prepared for the MLB Draft and is slated to be one of the few players from Southern Arizona under consideration this year.

Villa did his best to keep Copper in the game and he finished 4-4 with a triple, a double and three RBI including a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to give Copper a 4-3 lead.

“I’m seeing the ball really well and I did great in the Arizona coach’s all-star game this weekend in Phoenix so I’m kind of on a streak,” Villa explained. “I played against all of these guys in club and with a few of them so this is really fun for me. I think we all had fun with it.”

Villa is keeping his options open this summer but his bat has done a lot of talking in the last few days.

Troy Gutbub (Catalina Foothills) also had a hot bat for Teal and his double in the seventh helped set the stage for an RBI double from Derek Daly (Ironwood Ridge) a couple batters later to pace the team two more runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Gutbub finished 3-3 with two doubles.

Teal would plate eight runs in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Jake Engel (Ironwood Ridge) doubled in the inning and Campillo and Martin Garcia (Tucson) both tripled.

Down 13-4, Copper came up with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to give us the 13-6 final.

Other top performances include Spencer Packard (CDO) with two hits, Christoff 3-5 with a double, Engel 3-5 with a double and Daly finished 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

The All-Star Series will now move to Catalina Foothills High School Thursday and Friday night.
