Girls Developmental Golf League Pilot Program set in motion

August 19, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Earlier this week the AIA executive board approved a proposal for a developmental girls golf league pilot program beginning this fall.

Below are facts and reasoning about the league and how it will come together:

AIA Girls Golf Developmental League Pilot Program

Eligibility – Fall golf only - AIA member schools - 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and /or 6A.

Purpose –Transition players into AIA high school golf programs and promote the sport of golf to ALL schools. “Prepare players for a lifelong love of the game of golf”.

Why – Due to past history of cancelled matches and /or programs.

Teams - They will consist of a minimum of two (2) players and a maximum of four (4) players. A team may play 2, 3 or 4 players and count 2 scores. Teams will participate in the girl’s golf DL by declaring on or before Tuesday August 30 of their intent to participate. Athletic Directors can email the AIA golf Tournament Coordinator Dean Visser at dvisser@aiaonline.org.

Level Declaration – By declaring an intent to participate in the DL, the team will not be eligible for the post season AIA team tournament. Once you choose the Developmental League the player (s) cannot then go back to the competitive level during the current season.  A school may fill their schedule (14 maximum opportunities) with DL matches, freedom matches and/or invitational tournaments.

Scheduling - The school may keep the schedule that they have been given and the coach will communicate with the participating schools that their players are an AIA Developmental team and will be using the Modified Stableford scoring method for their match.

Matches – All matches must be scored and played on a USGA rated golf course.

Scores - Must be attested by the participating schools players and coaches. The HOME school will be responsible for the entering of all events/scores into the live scoring AZPREPS365 app.

Hybrid golf matches - The AZPEPS365 app will track both the standard scoring method and the Modified stableford scoring method therefore teams can play side by side at any scheduled golf match. Each event will include individual and team leaderboards.

Modified Stableford - Scoring method used for all matches, no one is disqualified for picking up their ball on one hole and moving on to the next.

The AWGA in partnership with the PUSD are looking to hold an invitational tournament for individuals and/or teams who have participated in the DL. This would be played during the first week of October – prior to over seeding and fall breaks. Each player/school will be responsible for the entry fee into the DL Invitational.
