Canyon del Oro tore through the field in the 14th annual Desert Mountain Softball Invitational winning the championship Saturday and doing it in a variety of ways.
The Dorados won their first pool-play game via shutout, blasted their next two opponents with double-digit run totals and rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat Red Mountain in their final pool play game Friday night, 7-6.
Canyon del Oro went back to pounding the opposition, pulled off another 5-1 comeback against Red Mountain in the semifinals and completed its day with two big late rallies in a 9-5 win over Desert Mountain in the title game at Horizon Park.
CDO became the 11th different school to win the tournament in its 14-year history. CDO scored 29 runs in three championship-bracket games Saturday and put up gobs of runs when they were needed most.
"This is a talented team," Canyon del Oro coach Kelly Fowler said. "We have no MVPs, just a lot of talent. They battle together as one."
Desert Mountain, which reached the title game with two one-run victories over Gilbert and Chaparral (eight innings), had CDO seemingly on the ropes after four innings with a 3-0 lead. This just two days after losing to the Dorados, 15-2, in a pool play game.
Sophomore pitcher Andy Wellins had limited CDO to one hit in four innings and induced eight ground ball outs in the process. But when CDO outfielder Emily McSherry reached on an error to open the bottom of the fifth, it also opened the flood gates.
Five batters later (two walks, two singles and a triple) combined to produce a five-run rally and a 5-3 lead for the Dorados. When Desert Mountain answered with a two-run single by Kasey McCravey in the top of the sixth to tie the game a 5, CDO calmly went to work to regain the lead in its half of the inning.
A leadoff single by McSherry and a long two-run, opposite field homer to right by catcher Sam Nettling touched off a four-run, sixth inning by the Dorados that broke the tie and earned them the title.
"Andy gave us four strong innings and went beyond by expectations," Desert Mountain coach Rick Sharp said. "It was pretty clear she was running out of gas, and they came back. They have three pretty good pitchers and more depth than we do. But I thought we gave a good performance (in the tournament)."
Mattie Fowler earned the win in relief with an inning-plus of scoreless relief. Mattie Fowler also picked up the win in the 7-6 win over Red Mountain in the semifinals a couple hours earlier.
"We didn't come here to win the tournament," Kelly Fowler said. "We came here to elevate our play. Winning the tournament was just icing on the cake."
