EV win-loss breakdown Week 1: Of the 24 EV schools opening their season last week, 16 won and 8 lost. 6A EV teams were 6-6; 5A EV teams 4-0; 4A EV teams 2-1; 3A EV teams 2-1; 2A EV teams 2-0.

This and that: Mountain View, which played its first varsity game in 1976, seeks the 400th victory in its 40-year history in hosting Valley Vista. That's an average of 10 wins per season. With eight state championships to the Toros' credit, that's one every five years. The last MV championship took place in 2002..... Basha hits the road for the first time this season visiting Pinnacle with the possibility of a Ryan Kelley-Spencer Rattler matchup at quarterback. Rattler didn't play last week in Pinnacle's loss to Brophy, resting a hand injury. Rattler is probable for the game, according to coach Dana Zupke. Kelley tried to rally Basha past Westview, but fell short in a 54-36 loss. Kelley passed for 238 yards and 2 TDs in the opener. The game has an 8 p.m. kickoff for a national audience on ESPNU....  The Skyline-Highland game is intriguing. Highland gutted it out in Division I last year when it could have opted for D-II. They debuted well llast week in downing Corona, 28-17, with a balanced attack. The passing game was huge with two bombs from quarterback Jake Kersting to standout wide out Tyler Johnson. Kersting passed with efficiency for 277 yards. Corona's forte is the run and Highland kept that in check last week. Skyline rushed for 275 yards in its opener and as in recent years showed a pair of backs capable of 100-yard games -- veteran Kaleb Hardin and newcomer Aaron Wood. Both totated in the 90-yard range rushing. Quarterback TJ Duarte picked up where he left off last season completing 11-of-14 passes for 177 yards, 2 TDs and no picks.......The Hamilton-Queen Creek matchup offers Queen Creek a second crack at the 6A power Huskies. The teams played last year early and Queen Creek hung tough for three quarters in a 31-14 defeat. Queen Creek passed for twice what it rushed (276-137) for in its opening-game win over Cesar Chavez with sophomore quarterback Devin Larsen at the helm. Running back Jace Koester ground out 100-yards rushing and 2 TDs and caught a pair of TD passes. Hamilton pitched a blowout-shutout of Sandra Day O'Connor last week. Overcoming a stouter defense is Queen Creek's task in this one.... Marcos de Niza, a consensus preseason top-5 team in 4A, attempts to make Moro's debut a success in an unusual matchup with Prescott Prescott is the only northern Arizona school Marcos de Niza has played since it began play in 1972. The Padres played Prescott in 1972 and 1973 and won both meetings..... Pima and Gilbert Christian both stepped up this season from eight-man football to the traditional 11. Pima won its opener last week, 34-12, over Miami and won D-VI (1A) title last year.....Four of 6A's top programs play California schools Friday and Saturday in Brothers of Arms contests in California. That's Desert Ridge, Mountain Pointe, Chandler and Brophy. 4A favorite Saguaro racked up a win over Serra CA last week at Saguaro. The Sabercats do the out-of-state thing again on Saturday with a game in Colorado against Valor Christian. Last year Mountain Pointe, Brophy and Desert Vista won games against California opponents. Chandler lost to Nevada power Bishop Gorman... American Leadership, which moves up to 3A this year, gets a chance to play the defending champ, Pusch Ridge. Pusch Ridge relied on a superb defense last season to win its title and returns many of the key pieces to that unit. A good test for both teams.
