October 17, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Region-title chases are the focus with  two weeks left in the 6A through 2A regular season. East Valley schools are vying for region titles in 9 of the 12 that house one school or more from the area.

WEEK 10 of  11 EAST VALLEY GAMES

THURSDAY OCT. 20: 6A -- Desert Ridge (6-2) at Desert Vista (4-4). FRIDAY OCT. 21: 6A -- Brophy Prep (7-2) at Chandler (6-2); Mesa (3-6) at Dobson (5-3); Perry (7-1) at Hamilton (6-2); Gilbert (1-7) at Highland (2-6); Corona del Sol (4-4) at Mountain Pointe (8-0); Westwood (2-6) at Mesa Mtn. View (5-3); Red Mountain (5-3) at Skyline (7-1). 5A -- Williams Field (8-0) at Mesquite (6-2); Cholla (1-7) at Poston Butte (3-5); Vista Grande (2-6) at Queen Creek (7-1); Campo Verde (6-2) at Sierra Linda (0-8); McClintock (3-5) at Sunnyslope (5-3). 4A -- Seton (4-4) at Casa Grande (4-4); Washington (0-8) at Combs (1-7); Apache Junction (3-5) at Coronado (4-4); Marcos de Niza (6-2) at Higley (7-1). 3A -- North Pointe (0-8) at Casteel (7-1); American Leadership (7-1) at Coolidge (2-6); Benjamin Franklin (6-2) at Florence (7-1); Valley Christian (3-5) at Yuma Catholic (6-2). 2A -- Gilbert Christian (4-4) at Camp Verde (2-5); Tempe Prep (6-2) at Joy Christian (0-6); San Tan Foothills (4-3) at Scottsdale Prep (3-4). BYES -- Tempe (4-5), Basha (3-6), Chandler Prep (6-2).

THIS AND THAT: Two of three East Valley-laden 6A regions have titles undecided -- the East Valley and Premier regions. Mountain Pointe nailed down the Central Region crown beating Desert Ridge, 27-13, last week. The East Valley Region's decisive contest features Red Mountain at Skyline this week. Skyline is the lone unbeaten in EVR play and the Coyotes win the region outright if they top Red Mountain. A Red Mountain victory likely earns it a share of the region crown and possibly the title outright should Mountain View stumble in either of its two remaining games (Westwood and Mesa High). Skyline has won the last 10 games its played against sister (Mesa schools). Its last loss to a Mesa school was the regular-season finale to Red Mountain in 2013......The Premier Region remains up for grabs. Chandler leads and controls its destiny with a 2-0 record. The Wolves host Brophy Prep (1-2) then visit  Hamilton (1-1) to close the season. Perry (1-1) kept in the chase beating Brophy last week and finishes at Hamilton and at Basha (1-2)...Barring a Mesquite upset of Williams Field, Williams Field and Queen Creek meet the final week of the season to to decide the San Tan Region. Queen Creek's lone loss is to Hamilton and Williams Field has yet to lose or endure a close call. Poston Butte is out of region-title contention in the 5A Sonoran, ditto McClintock in the 5A Metro...... Marcos de Niza not only picked up record-breaking career win No. 332 for coach Paul Moro last week, but now has a shot at the 4A Desert Sky Region title at Higley. Marcos lost its final game of September to Casa Grande, but Casa Grande has dropped two region games since to give the Padres new life in the region chase. Higley is region champ if it beats Marcos this week; Marcos is region champ if it beats Higley and Tempe High next week.. Apache Junction and Combs are out of contention in the 4A Black Canyon with the region winner either Dysart of Coronado....... American Leadership has the inside track to the 3A Central Region title with its 3-0 region mark. The Patriots are a game up on Florence (2-1) and Safford (2-1). ALA has already beaten Florence and wins the region with a wins over Coolidge and Safford. It's likely ALA will be facing Safford the final week with the region title on the line. Yuma Catholic hosts Valley Christian with the winner taking the region lead in the 3A Metro with a week to play. Valley Christian must beat Yuma Catholic and Casteel in its final two games to win the region. That's a tall order....Chandler Prep has clinched the 2A Metro East with a 4-0 record and one region game left next week against Scottsdale Prep. Tempe Prep's bid to win the 2A Metro West title took a hit  after its loss two weeks ago to region-leader Phoenix Christian. Phoenix Christian and Scottsdale Christian battle this week. Phoenix Christian wins the region if it defeats Scottsdale Christian. A Scottsdale Christian victory likely forges a three-way tie for the region title among PC, SCA and Tempe Prep.
