Perry girls delighted in winning a second trophy at an invitational this season -- Dobson Mustang Classic

Nineteen days ago Campo Verde's boys and Perry's girls soccer teams finished up champions of the Coyote Classic at Campo Verde. The schools headed slightly northwest this week and did the same at the Dobson Mustang Classic at Dobson High.

Campo Verde had the tougher road in claiming the boys title, taking a 2-0 victory over Perry in the final. Ethan Willson scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Shawn McGarvin and Kamrin Shafer rocketed home a header from the top of the box in the 75th minute to complete the victory. For about 15-20 minutes prior to the putaway goal, Perry kept the pressure on in Campo's end with corners and chances to tie. Campo Verde evaded each one and breathed a sigh of relief after Shafer's long-range header. It raised Campo Verde's record for the year to 17-0.

"This is a confident team, but we have a target on our back," Campo Verde coach Drew Guarneri said. "The boys have played well, We were tired at the end."

Campo Verde had to work extra hard earlier in the day to get to the final. They outlasted Gilbert, 4-2 in two overtimes. Gilbert scored late in regulation to tie the match at 2. The Coyotes got the go-ahead goal off a long throw in that Nathon Smith converted. Willson also had a goal and Shawn McGarvin two in the triumph over Gilbert. Perry also had to play extra minutes to reach the boys final. The Pumas played Dobson to a 1-1 tie after regulation and won in a shootou, 6-5.

Perry's girls didn't need extra time in either their semifinal win or  title conquest. Perry topped Campo Verde, 6-2, in the semifinals getting a hat trick in one half of play from Kiara Parker. Parker received a red card late in the first half and did not play the rest of the match. The red card denied her participation in the championship match.

It didn't matter as Perry scored twice in the first half and four times in the second to best Millennuim, 6-0. Amanda Dahl scored twice with two assists in the title match. She scored the first goal from about 25 yards out with a laser to the far post. Dahl assisted Remmi Deutsch on the goal that made it 2-0 at halftime by chasing down a free kick and saving in the far corner, She wheeled around and fed a cross that Deutsch headed in. Dahl also had two goals and three assists in the semifinal victory.

Anissa Montoya, Dahl, Jackie Gilbert and Amber Jimenez scored in the second half to complete a very offensive day for the Pumas.

"We're still tweaking some things, but we're getting better and better," Perry coach John Roberts said. "We're working in a new formation this year that we're getting the hang of. We're healthy and gettting a lot of people involved."

Perry improved to 14-1 and has won 14 games in a row. The Pumas lost their season-opener to Desert Mountain, 1-0.
