Mesa Mtn. View avenges losses in winning 5A volleyball title

The 5A volleyball title captured Saturday by Mesa Mtn. View was well-earned.

The seventh-seeded Toros managed to beat three schools that defeated them during the regular season - Mesquite, Gilbert and Salpointe. They took care of No. 2 seed Hamilton in the quarterfinals. Perhaps even more astonishing was taking down No. 1 seed Salpointe in three games in the final. That can happen with momentum, confidence and big-time efforts from players like middle blocker Ryan Olsen and setter Derek Skousen. Salpointe had been swept in a regular match only once all season prior to that by Brophy.

The boys volleyball crown was the first in school history and leaves Mountain View short of a boys state championship in just two sports -- swimming (Brophy dominated) and soccer. Mountain View has been runner-up several times in swimming and runner-up once in soccer.
