Red Mountain Continues Search for Team Communication

September 7, 2017 by Leah Burnette, Arizona State University

Lack of communication for the Red Mountain Mountain Lions was the ultimate factor in last Thursday’s loss against Hamilton High School.

And although they scored a three set win against La Joya Community High School Wednesday, the Mountain Lions  are still in search for that connection between the entire team.

That’s what captain and junior libero Makenna Fullford said the team has focused on.

“Its definitely difficult getting everyone on the same page,” Fullford said. “But I think as a captain it is important for me to continue to encourage everyone and make sure we all get on one level.”

The Mountain Lions came out strong during the first two sets, never letting the Fighting Lobos take the lead. The third match produced a La Joya lead at 10-8. But Red Mountain proved to be the better team, taking the final match 25-13.

“It is a good boost to go into our tournament this coming weekend,” said head coach Kevin Holck. “Its always a moral boost to take a win and take it in a good way.”

Senior middle hitter Kayla Subbert shined during the match, in which she had eight kills. Subbert said the team looked at last week’s loss as a learning experience.

“We went into the match really timid last week, and that’s what kind of set us back,” Subbert said. “But after this win, we know what we are capable of and the potential we have.”

Red Mountain (2-1) looks to repeat as it faces La Joya again Friday for the first of three matches in the House of Payne Invitational at Chandler High School.
