Hamilton Uses Explosive First Half to Put Away Cesar Chavez Early in 59-12 Victory

September 21, 2017 by Trej Bell, Arizona State University

The Hamilton Huskies (Chandler) used an explosive first half en route to its 59-12 victory over the Cesar Chavez Champions (Laveen) on the Huskies homecoming night.

Behind Tyler Shough’s 293 passing yards and three touchdowns Hamilton scored 45 first-half points with 31 coming in the second quarter.

“My guys picked me up really well, we just have to do our job and try to score more points,” Shough said.

The other half of Hamilton’s powerhouse offensive tandem, Jawhar Jordan Jr., saw minimal time Friday due to an ankle injury he sustained in last week’s 52-28 victory over Desert Ridge.

“I hurt it last week, but this week I hurt it more so I wasn’t risking it. we have bigger teams ahead so I mine as well rest it now” Jordan said.

Jordan had 8-yards on three carries with a 3-yard touchdown rush in the first quarter.

In wake of Jordan’s absence, junior running back Mo Parson was put at the helm of the Huskie’s elite rushing attack, and he flourished.

Parson finished the night with 12 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns, adding another potential threat to this dynamic Huskies offense.

Junior running back Manny Armenta also contributed 109 rushing yards on eight carries and a touchdown and one catch for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Hamilton’s offense pounced on Cesar Chavez early, scoring on their first four possessions, including that 71-yard touchdown pass from Shough to Armenta on the Huskies’ opening drive.

Hamilton wide receivers Brenden Rice (So) and Brandon Schenks (Jr) performances nearly mirrored each other like their first names do, as Rice caught two passes for 80 yards and a touchdown while Schenks caught four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

The Huskies defense limited Cesar Chavez’s offense to just 274 total yards.

“We've got to focus on what we’re doing we can’t play down to any level other than what we started with,” Hamilton head coach Dick Baniszewski said.

For the Champions, this was its toughest game of the season so far giving up 59 points, almost three times as much as it had given up in a game this season. They only generating 12 points on offense, about 15 points below their season average.

The one bright spot for Cesar Chavez came from their running back/ outside line-backer Andrew Blitzke who had 12 carries for 63 yards and two TDs.

Looking ahead, Cesar Chavez has four of its six remaining regular season games at home against teams with a combined record of 7-7. The two road games look favorable for the Champions as their opponents have a combined record of 3-5.

Hamilton (4-1) will travel Mesa Friday to take on a hot-and-cold Skyline Coyotes team (3-2) as it looks to take care of business before section games begin.

Cesar Chavez (1-3) will play host to Fairfax (3-2) Friday as it tries to get the season back on track with what would be the Champions first home win of the season.
