Many late-round picks in the Major League Baseball draft do not end up signing, but it's still an honor to be selected.
The 31st through 50th rounds of the 2011 MLB first-year player draft was held Wednesday morning and a couple dozen more Arizona kids were taken. Here is a list of those:
Mickey McConnell (SS), St. Mary's College/Dobson HS (Los Angeles Dodgers, 31st round); Aaron Bummer (LHP), Sunrise Mountain HS (New York Yankees, 31st round); David Jagoditsh (RHP), Pima CC/Marana Mtn. View HS (Pittsburgh, 32nd round); Kyle Brule (RHP), Oklahoma Baptist/Marcos de Niza HS (San Diego, 32nd round); Malcolm Holland (2B), Hamilton HS (Los Angeles Dodgers, 33rd round); Andy Workman (OF), ASU/Hamilton HS (Los Angeles Angels, 34th round); Bryce Greager (IF), Fountain Hills HS (Texas, 37th round); Jerome Pena (2B), Texas Christian-Cactus Shadows HS (Baltimore, 38th round); Jordan Kipper (RHP), Mountain Pointe HS (Los Angeles Dodgers, 39th round); T.J. Geith (LHP), Louisiana Lafayette/Sunrise Mountain HS (Tampa Bay, 39th round); Drew Stankiewicz (2B), Gilbert HS (Colorado, 40th round); Travis Lane (C), Central AZ CC/Sandra Day O'Connor HS (Kansas City, 41st round); Casey Thomas (2B), Desert Vista HS (Los Angeles Dodgers, 41st round); Adam Frank (LHP), Williams Field HS (Oakland, 43rd round); Landis Ware (2B), Baylor.Chandler HS (Los Angeles Angels, 44th round); Nevin Wilson (LHP), Chaparral HS (Philadelphia, 44th round); Robbie Ingram (LHP), Yavapai CC/Sinagua HS (Pittsburgh, 45th round); Andrew Allen (1B), Cal State Los Angeles/Desert Vista HS (Detroit, 45th round); Nathaniel Causey (C), Gilbert HS (Colorado, 46th round); Max Rossiter (C), Central AZ CC/Highland HS (Tampa Bay, 46th round); Casey Scott (2B), Notre Dame Prep (Colorado, 47th round); Kirby Pellant (2B), Chandler-Gilbert CC/Corona del Sol HS (Cincinnati, 47th round); Ethan Springston (OF), Seton Catholic HS (New York Yankees, 47th round); Alex Real (3B), Boulder Creek HS (Atlanta, 48th round); Jake Williams (1B), South Mountain CC/Brophy Prep (Arizona, 49th round); J.J. Ethel (C), Louisville/Mountain Pointe HS (Los Angeles Dodgers, 49th round) and Zach Regier (OF), Gilbert HS (Chicago White Sox, 49th round).
Some notes about some of the players. Mickey McConnell did not play college baseball at St. Mary's, but was a standout for the Gaels mens' basketball team the last couple of years. He was an all-star baseball player at Dobson High. McConnell is working out and hoping to be drafted later this month in the NBA draft. Jake Williams is the son of Diamondbacks thirdbase coach Matt Williams and Andrew Allen is the son of former Diamondbacks broadcaster, now a broadcaster with Detroit, Rod Allen.
