The Seton Catholic Sentinels swept the Marcos de Niza Padres Monday night 3-0 in a Class 4A Desert Sky Region matchup.

After losing 3-0 to the Padres earlier in the season, the Sentinels came out determined to beat the Padres early on in the match.

“Marcos (de Niza) beat us pretty bad when we went to visit them earlier in the season,” Seton Catholic coach Patti Schoenhardt said. “We didn’t like that feeling and we weren’t (going to) have it again.”

Seton Catholic (23-8, 7-1) was able to consistently finish rallies throughout the match against Marcos de Niza (15-16, 6-1). During the second set, the Sentinels gained momentum off kills that led to their 25-9 victory.

“(The Sentinels) were able to last longer in rallies,” Marcos de Niza freshman middle hitter Hailey White said. “They were able to outplay us and know our weaknesses.”

Seton Catholic limited unforced errors and returned Marcos de Niza’s serves consistently throughout all three sets. The Padres, losing their first match of regional play, were unable to connect passes and match the intensity of the Sentinels.

“We knew they were looking forward to this match for a long time,” Marcos de Niza coach Melissa Yee said. “We got in our heads, and they put it to us.”

Tuesday the Padres face the Higley Knights (17-10,4-3) in their last Desert Sky Region match of the season. Up next for the Sentinels is a home non-region match against the Estrella Foothills Wolves (19-10) on Tuesday.
