Game Preview: Chaparral vs. North Canyon
January 23, 2018 by Lexy Cancelmi, Arizona State University
North Canyon High School Wednesday night is where the Chaparral Firebirds look to further their six-game winning streak and make their already successful season even better.
The Firebirds (17-5) defeated their previous opponent, Queen Creek, 80-30 on Tuesday night.
After their 50-point win over Queen Creek, the Firebirds are even more eager to continue their hot streak but are no strangers to big numbers on the scoreboard.
The last time the Firebirds and Rattlers met was on Jan. 16. Chaparral won the game 84-24. North Canyon is on a six-game losing-streak after their loss to Arcadia Tuesday.
Firebirds coach Brian Porth is confident in the team's chemistry as they go into Wednesday's game. He says the team practices and plays well together and it shows up in the games.
"They really work hard to create great opportunities for each other and share the ball well," Porth said.
Porth credited the team's senior leadership as the root of its success.
Senior guard Maddie Vick believes the team needs to keep it simple when it comes to winning and continuing to win.
"We really need to focus on the fundamentals if we want to keep our winning streak going," Vick said.
Vick added that confidence and staying focused are the key components when it comes to playing to win.
"We have the talent and have put in the work to beat anyone," Vick said. No team has come within 12 points of Chaparral over its six-game victory streak.
Tipoff is 7 p.m. Wednesday in Phoenix.
