Gilbert, Dobson set to clash in David vs. Goliath matchup

February 13, 2018 by Warren Younger, Arizona State University

Going into Wednesday’s first round of the 6A state tournament, Gilbert and Dobson are rolling. Both have won eight of their last nine contests. No. 3 Gilbert can thank to the prolific scoring duo of Hanna and Haley Cavinder. No. 14 Dobson doesn't feature any sisters but plays like a family.

The Cavinders both rank in the top three scorers in the 6A division and are both ranked in the top 50 guards of the class of 2019, according to ESPN.

Dobson head coach Henry Bribiescas has respect for the Gilbert duo.

“The Cavinder sisters are certainly a handful,” Bribiescas said. “They will present the biggest problem for us.”

Gilbert is 24-3.

“Gilbert is a solid team,” Dobson Bribiescas said. “They are well coached and play hard.”

Both teams had to wait until Saturday to see who they would play. “We like our matchup,” Bribiescas said. “While they are quick overall, we can match their intensity and we have had success on the road this season.”

Dobson is 8-1 on the road but facing an uphill battle.

“We will have to produce on offense and play our best defense,” Bribiescas said. “Getting back on defense will be key.”

Defense has been the name of the game for Dobson, which turned in a dominant defensive effort against Copper Canyon in its play-in game. Dobson held Copper Canyon scoreless in the third quarter and only gave up 28 points overall.

“The main thing contributing to us hitting this stride is the undeniable fact that we all have each other’s back,” Dobson co-captain Cailee Benford said. “When we go out there, we go play for each other.”

Benford said playing with the right mindset is the key to success.

“Our current mindset is centered on gratefulness,” Bedford said. “Especially being a senior, I really have no time to take anything for granted.”

Gilbert is the heavy favorite but Dobson embraces being the underdog.

“I feel like everyone is not expecting anything from us so we are ready to show them who we really are,'' Dobson co-captain Amaya Leon said.

“I think our team has truly surprised people this season, and we intend on continuing to do so,” Benford said.

Bribiescas said the pressure is on Gilbert.

“The pressure is on them as they are the higher ranked team,” Bribiescas said. “I have learned from experience that the team that plays the best for 32 minutes moves on.

“Throw the rankings out the window, anything can happen.”
