Westview turned the game around and defeated Central 10-5 on Tuesday night in baseball action.

The game was all tied up in the third inning 4-4 after Westview junior Lucas Deen slid into the home plate.

The Knights started off the inning down 4-1 but Deen’s double sent junior Larry Ross and freshman Josh Chavez home helping the Knights cut down the lead to one.

The Bobcats headed into the bottom of the third inning looking to take the lead but were insteade retired in order, sending them back on the field and the Knights back to the plate.

The Knights came into the fourth inning with momentum and took the lead for the first time in the game 5-4 with senior Drew Joya scoring the go-ahead run.

“I saw a lot of resilience in my team as the game got tighter,” said Westview coach John Irish. “We stopped making mental mistakes and started to focus and that is when the game started to turn around.”

The Bobcats made an attempt at taking the lead back after junior Ismael Torres hit a single, but Knights pitcher  Evan Santana, a freshman, struck out the next three hitters taking the game to the fifth inning.

Joya hit a double in the fifth and Central pitcher junior Mario Guzman gained his momentum back striking out a couple players before leaving the game throwing a total of 68 pitches.

“I prepared myself a lot for this game,” said Guzman. “A lot of running and stretching to get my arm ready because I knew this was going to be a tough game.”

The Bobcats entered the bottom of the fifth inning with full energy. Central seniors Miguel Motta, Efren Torres and Josh Sambrano hit singles starting the inning off well. With the bases fully loaded junior Edwin Gurrola hit a single sending Motta home and tying the score 5-5 heading into the sixth.

Sophomore Jack Nehls hit a double sending Ross home and giving Westview a 6-5 lead

.

Senior Pablo Gaytan followed right behind, hitting a triple sending Nehls home. The Knights would continue to score ending the inning with  up by five.

“We really got focused in the sixth inning,” said Irish. “Our top of the lineup took care of things and had us come out successful.”

The remainder of innings went scoreless and the Knights celebrated their hard-fought comeback to defeat the Bobcats.

“We expected a good team,” said Central coach Luis Lujan. “We knew we couldn’t make mistakes and unfortunately we made way too many. I liked the effort at the beginning, I thought the first four innings were great, but once things didn’t go our way it was the complete opposite.”

Westview will improve to 4-8-2 for an overall record and will play on Friday at Highland.

Central now has an overall record of 4-5 and will remain at home on Wednesday to play Cesar Chavez.
