Phoenix Christian might become football force after all

August 27, 2011 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

Here are a few leftover observations from the first full week of football . . .

*Looks like some people (including me) underestimated the potential of Phoenix Christian entering the season.

The Cougars, led by new coach Brandon Harris, an assistant at a few other Valley schools the last decade, defeated a pretty good Phoenix Arizona Lutheran team 48-28.

So now we will see if PC can continue that type of play and become a factor in the Division V, Section II race, which features Class 2A champ Phoenix Northwest Christian, Yuma Catholic, Phoenix Scottsdale Christian, Tempe Prep and Chandler Valley Christian.

*The biggest surprise had to be Scottsdale Desert Mountain’s 43-7 win over Mesa Mountain View. It most certainly has to be rewarding for Desert Mountain coach Tony Tabor and his Wolves, who finished 0-10 a year ago.

There will be wolves of a different sort nipping at the heels of new Mountain View coach Chad DeGrenier, who came over from Cave Creek Cactus Shadows.

Les Willsey, my AIA365.com writing colleague, urges patience for fans of the Toros, and I agree.

*Phoenix Camelback coach Brandon McNutt recently told The Arizona Republic that he thinks this could be a breakout year for his team. A 19-12 victory over Phoenix South Mountain, led by Daryl Phillips, Camelback’s previous coach and a Spartans alumnus, has to do wonders for Camelback’s confidence.

*There are other quarterbacks who have received more attention, but Glendale Apollo’s Jonathan Brown might wind up being the best of them.

He led the Hawks to a 24-13 road victory over Peoria by passing for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns and rushing for 121 yards. Apollo is the same school that brought you Prince Amukamara, who starred as a running back and defensive back before going on to star at the University of Nebraska and become a first-round NFL draft pick by the New York Giants.

*Class 4A Division I champion Scottsdale Saguaro and 4A Division II champion Phoenix Thunderbird meet in one of the new week’s top games, a Thursday TV game at Saguaro.

*Glendale Joy Christian 96, San Pasqual (Winterhaven, Calif.) 0 – a little too much of a joyful noise for my taste. Ease up on the accelerator a little bit.
