Corona del Sol split a swim meet against Red Mountain on Thursday night at the Kino Aquatic Center with the boys’ team winning 164-77.

Senior Dylan Edge gave quality performances in all three of the relays, and he placed first in the individual 100-yard backstroke.

Edge said sometimes he doesn’t know if he has won  near the end of a race, “but once you see the actual results it’s a really nice feeling.”

Reese Latto, also a senior, got first place in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke, and also swam in two of the relay races.

Latto has been swimming since the eighth grade so these races have become second nature to him.

“Going into my fourth year, there aren’t too many nerves, but there’s always something that happens at meets that will put you on the edge,” Latto said. “But as a whole, racing itself isn’t too stressful.”

Each of the boys’ relay teams did very well. The 4x50-yard and the 4x100-yard relays  placed first and the 4x50-yard freestyle took second.

“My favorite race is still the 4x100-yard relay just because of the guys that are on it,” Latto said.

Edge agreed.

“I love the people who are in our relays, and they definitely help each other and encourage each other and motivate each other,” he said. “I just really appreciate having everyone there.”

As for the girls’ team, the Mountain Lions came out on top, beating the Aztecs 127-50.

“The boys did really well,” Aztecs swimming coach Ron Musgrave  said. “The girls are improving.”

Musgrave has been the swim coach at Corona del Sol for the past eight years, and he didn’t seem too worried about his team’s performance Thursday night.

“It’s more or less like practice,” Musgrave said about dual meets.

The season is still early yet, morale is high, and the swimmers just want to do their best.

“I’m always going to give it 100 percent,” Latto said. “I always want to respect the guy next to me.

“I always want to try to give them the best race possible.”
