Desert Ridge wins House of Payne volleyball invitational

Desert Ridge, a 5A-I quarterfinalist last season, completed a perfect two days Saturday afternoon by knocking off Liberty High for the gold division championship of the 1st annual House of Payne girls volleyball invitational at Chandler High School.

Desert Ridge, which won all eight of its matches played Friday and Saturday, knocked off Liberty, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13. Maggie Niu paced Desert Ridge in the final match with 13 kills and Kaja Sandberg added five. Niu and Sandberg were named to the all-tournament team of the 12-school field. Liberty was paced by outside hitter Noel Pauga, who was named the tournament's most valuable player. Pauga had 13 kills in the title match. Liberty was the 4A-II state runner-up last season to Seton Catholic.

Marcos de Niza, which won the silver division, was led by setter Tineille Waggoner, a member of the all-tournament team.  Also named to the all-tournament team were Red Mountain outside hitter Heather Leavitt and middle blocker Emily Franklin and Mesa High hitter-setter Kelcee Munk.
