The expected, unexpected two weeks in to football season

September 5, 2011 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

The same old same old and surprises. That's what we've witnessed after two full weeks of the 2011 prep football season from East Valley and southern Arizona squads.

The same old same old? Here we go:

Start with the Chandler schools. Hamilton, Chandler, Basha and Perry are each 2-0. Not a shock given that all four have secured playoff spots routinely, even Perry as it tries to keep pace in Division II. Hamilton's winning streak is at 42 now after it crushed Santa Fe. Chandler gets its first big test this week against forrmer Fiesta Region rival and unbeaten Mesquite. Basha should roll on with St. Mary's after toppling Mountain Ridge last week. Perry faces Queen Creek, the third Division III foe in a row for Perry. Things will get much trickier for Perry the following week against Marcos de Niza.

Desert Ridge at  2-0 with crushing wins over Gilbert and Mesa Mountain View. If you dabble in prognostication, the Jaguars are a team you don't want to pick against right now. They've won with ease thus far and without one of their marquee players in Joey Counts. Not a bad idea to keep Counts fresh. In two weeks the Jaguars get a title-game rematch with Hamilton.

Williams Field and Higley aren't working up much of a sweat yet in posting 2-0 records. Williams Field, the 4A-II runner-up last year, has notched two shutouts. Higley is putting up plenty of points, better than 40 per game. Tougher tests are coming for both, but a meeting between the two in a few weeks should be interesting with former Williams Field coach Steve Campbell (former McClintock High head coach) facing Higley and new coach Eddy Zubey (an assistant under Campbell at McClintock just a few years back.

Some surprises? Here's a few:

Dobson posting a 2-0 mark out of the gate. The Mustangs haven't had much to get excited about recently and taking an overtime win on the road against an improved Desert Mountain is a big deal for coach Alex Jacobson and Co. Next up for Dobson is a home game this week against Corona del Sol, which won its first game under Tom Joseph last week and snapped an 11-game skid in the process by thumping Westwood.

Mesa Mountain View (0-2) taking a five-game losing streak to Skyline High this Friday. On the flip side Skyline has won three in a row, two this year and its finale last year. Both streaks are shockers for those programs. Mountain View has one five-game skid in 31 years of football and that was spread over two seasons (late 1991 through early 1992). Skyline has won three games in a row just three times in 12 years. The Coyotes have never won four games in a row.

Canyon del Oro (0-2), a power of late in the old 4A-I, has multiple losses in a row for the first time since 2006. It's a three-game skid counting the title-game loss to Saguaro last December). The Dorados were expected to retool this year. But with a stauncher schedule so far (losses to Ironwood Ridge and Marana Mountain View.), things won't get much lighter the next few weeks with Cesar Chavez and Williams Field coming up next. Add the fact CDO has moved up a notch in competition overall. Division II (like 5A-II  last season) and it's a real challenge for coach Dustin Peace. CDO hasn't lost three games of more in a season since 2006, an 8-3 record overall.
