Chandler CC Invitational fun starting point for runners

Chandler High, a busy host in various sports this fall, welcomes at least 35 teams to the 17th annual Chandler Cross Country Invitational Saturday Sept. 10 at Tumbleweed Recreation Park.

The meet, for guys and girls does not have the traditional format. Four races are run with like grades competing against one another (an all freshman race, all sophomore race and so on). First race is freshman boys at 8:20 a.m. with freshman giirls starting one minute later. Sophomore race is set for 9 a.m., juniors at 9:35 a.m. and seniors at 10:05 a.m. Same one minute late start for the girls race in each.

Tumbleweed Recreation Park is located at 2250 S. McQueen Road at the southwest corner of McQueen and Germann roads in Chandler.

The defending team champs are Highland's boys and Desert Vista's girls. Last year's individual boys champs were: Williams Field's  Nathan Rodriguez (freshman); Basha's Nathan Riech (sophomore) and Maricopa's Chris Lessard (junior). Last year's individual girls champs were: Desert Vista's Nicole Hicks (freshman); Highland's Kristy Rush (sophomore) and Perry's Taylor De La Veaga (junior).

Teams entered as of Tuesday are Alhambra, Basha, Chandler, Chaparral, Corona del Sol, Desert Ridge, Desert Vista, Dobson, Gilbert, Hamilton, Highland, Mesa, Perry, St. Mary's, Westview, Xavier, Cactus Shadows, Canyon del Oro, Ironwood Ridge, Maricopa, McClintock, Marana Mtn. View, Shadow Mountain, Vista Grande, Campo Verde, Florence, Higley, Payson, Seton Catholic, Tempe, Williams Field, Horizon Honors and Valley Christian.
