Coronado prepares for final game of season against ALA

October 25, 2018 by Zachary Spiecker, Arizona State University

The Coronado Dons (1-8) and the American Leadership Academy Eagles (5-5) will play Friday night at Coronado in a game between two teams with dramatically different offenses.

The Dons have lost three straight games by double digits coming into the game. They have fallen to 1-3 in region play and are trying to end their rough season on a high note.

ALA comes in on a higher note. Last week, the Eagles dismantled Arizona College Prep, the only school Coronado has defeated this season, 53-14.  Playing an 11-game schedule, this game will determine whether ALA finishes above or below .500 so expect some aggression on both sides of the ball. The Eagles are not postseason eligible, but will be next season.

This game features two drastically different offenses that can cause major problems for both defenses.

Coronado Offense

The Dons' offense has been built on the run ever since transfer student Dayvion Sumpter joined the team against Arizona College Prep.

Sumpter, Coronado's highlight-reel running back, is expected to get more touches this week in more creative ways,  head coach Curt LeBlanc said.

Sumpter is probably going to see more pitch or edge runs this game as a way to get the speedy running back out in the open field.

Despite the presence of Sumpter, the Dons' offense has still had struggles running the ball, but that hasn't stopped Sumpter and starting quarterback Mikel James from putting up numbers. The two are combining for over 120 yards a game on the ground, and they both have multiple 50+ yard touchdowns this season.

Look for the electric quarterback-running back duo to use the read option in order to get both playmakers in space. If James or Sumpter can both consistently turn the corner on the ALA defense, watch for some long touchdowns.

The Dons aren't known as a passing team, but if LeBlanc lets James throw it, wide receiver Daijon Safford is averaging over 60 yards a game through the air and has broken a couple of long touchdowns.

ALA Offense

While Coronado is built around its run game, ALA is the exact opposite. This is an air-raid offense with a quarterback who is averaging over 200 yards a game. Sophomore quarterback Jack Ricedorff has completed over 50 percent of his passes to go along with 2,048 yards and a 20:13 TD:INT ratio.

This offense flows through the air as the Eagles have six wide receivers with over 100 yards this season. Ricedorff is great at distributing the ball to multiple wide receivers throughout the course of a game.

Ricedorff's best receiver, Weston Wardrop, could have a huge game against the Coronado defensive backs. The senior started off the season slow but has 263 yards on 10 catches in his past two games.

The Dons are expecting this ALA offense to bring out all the stops this week, including trick plays to knock the Dons off balance.

ALA is led by head coach Randy Ricedorff, who is known as an aggressive play-caller. Having won a state championship in 2007, Ricedorff has no plans on seeing one of his teams finish under .500.
