Perry strikes back at Brophy in 73-66 3OT victory

It was deja vu all over again as another third overtime period set in for Brophy and Perry Friday. Three weeks ago, Brophy outlasted Perry on a buzzer-beater. This time, Perry outgutted Brophy, 73-66.
"Tonight we gutted it out,'' said Perry coach Sam Duane. "I mean, we didn't quit, and we were down several times, and we didn't quit.We found a way to win."
Senior Jalen Williams sent the game into overtime with a clutch basket as time expired.
"I was just thinking, 'Score.' I knew time and the clock, I knew I had to get a bucket. I drove, nobody held, I got a layup," Williams said.
The 6'3" Williams progressed from a three-point first half to finish with 24.
"He has to be patient, he's a marked man," Duane said "He did a good job of that early -- distributing, letting some other guys go and then as the game went on, he was able to get into his game. But he has to be patient, and his shots will come."
Kyle Patterson, a 6'6'' senior, led Perry with 27 points.
"We [were] definitely frustrated after that first loss, but we found a way to win this time," Patterson said.
Ultimately, Brophy was unable to escape foul trouble in all three overtime periods as Williams, Patterson and the rest of the Pumas found their groove at the free throw line.
For Williams, it couldn't have come at a better time.
"We missed a lot of free throws down the stretch, and they were going off of it," Williams said on the previous matchup against Brophy. "I feel hitting our free throws really solidified it, put us up eight I think."
Perry's final three regular season games include two against big 6A rivals Hamilton and Chandler. Just like Brophy, the Pumas (10-5) will be out for blood.
"We lost against Chandler; we lost against Hamilton, we're coming to get one back," Patterson said.
Perry next game is at Hamilton Tuesday at 7 p.m.
