The final score was incidental. Friday was a special night at Phoenix Country Day.

Flowers, tears and a celebration followed a 31-25 loss to Scottsdale Christian on Senior Night.

Seniors Audrey LeClair, Audrey Novoa and Julia Padron combined for 19 points. They left it all on the line. Their leadership is the glue that keeps this team together.

“They mean everything to this team,” coach Sean Newland said. “They each bring something different and their leadership is really unique because each one has their own kind of style which has helped out the other younger players but I can’t enough about them because they have been terrific all year.”

The seniors reveled playing in front of their fellow students and family members for the last time in the nest.

“This night really showed what are team has and that is heart,” LeClair said. “They showed us that before the game that they care about us on senior night and it showed during the game to.”

The legacy they leave behind won't be forgotten as they hope their influence helps this team going forward.

“I want to leave behind this image of team and how important it is to be together,” Padron said. “When you’re older, you are going to remember the times with your teammates and not the wins and the losses. So, it's just important to stick together.”

This night was not just about a 15-9 season but the beginning of a new chapter in the program.

“I will miss probably everything about these seniors,” Newland said. “I’m going to miss the small things we talk about such as the conversations on the court and even just the conversations going on in their lives outside of basketball. The great thing is that we have created a culture here where girls come back and I know it will not be the last time that I will talk to them.”

Missed free throws doomed PCDS from a comeback.

“We needed to be a little more aggressive in parts of the game where we fell back a little,” Padron said. “I think we definitely could have kept up and could have been an even closer game, but despite all of that I think we put in a lot of effort and we did are best.”

With playoffs in the horizon, the goal remains the same - bring home a state championship.

“This team has a chance of going far in states,” LeClair said. “We’re going to push through and get as far as we can.”

PCDS ends the regular season at Scottsdale Christian.
