Haberman, Lessard prevail at Ojo Rojo CC Invitational

Tory Haberman won for the second time in two weeks running the same course. Chris Lessard got back to the winner's circle in his second try in two weeks at the same locale after a second-place finish that day.

Haberman, a Highland High senior, outdistanced Basha sophomore Courtney Goodrich by 18 seconds to take top honors in the 23rd annual Ojo Rojo Cross Country Invitiational at Tumbleweek Park in Chandler. Lessard, Maricopa's standout senior, gained bragging rights back from  tag-team partner McClintock's Eduardo Roa, edging him by one second. Two weeks ago Roa bested Lessard by 10 seconds in the senior race at the Chandelr Invitational.

Better for Haberman, her team won the girls competition by nine points over last year's champ Mesa Mountain View. Highland finished with 58 points, followed by Mountain View (67) and Desert Vista (74).

"I know she (Goodrich) had a good time the last race here," Haberman said. "It was a second better than mine. I thought she'd be my competition. I kind of waited the first mile or so and then I started to make my push. I was pleased with the race. My goal is to be in the top five of all of them."

Haberman's winning time was 18 minutes, 40 seconds. That was 30 seconds better than two weeks ago. Teammates Maddie Riggs, Kristy Rush, Emily Shaw and Imani Heath finished in the top 21 to help the Hawks slip past Mountain View for the team title.

For Lessard, he felt he rectified a race strategy from two weeks ago in falling to Roa.

"I got out too fast and burned myself up," Lessard said. "This week we had a dual and I decided to be more conservative. I was more relaxed and stayed back at the start. I won pretty easily with another top competitor (Saguaro's Jake Wynn) running in that dual.  I figured since it worked Wednesday, I'd try it again today. It was a battle all the way. I didn't pull ahead until the last 400 meters."

Lessard's time was 16:02, Roa's 16:03 and third-place finisher Nate Rodriguez of Corona del Sol  finished at 16:09. Rodriguez won the sophomore race two weeks ago at the Chandler Invite and carved 20 seconds off his time that day.

Mountain View's boys (103 points) defended their team title by nipping runner-up Highland (103). The Toros were led by Dalllin Gherkins (4th), Brandon Wheat (9th), R.J. Massey (23rd), Sawyer Lawson (32nd) and Dustin Hari (35th).
